Caminho do Norte

PR 21 Caminho do Norte follows traces of an old route between the south and north sides of Madeira from the Encumeada area toward Ribeira Grande. Once used for trade and pilgrimages, it crosses lively mountain forest, Laurissilva vegetation and viewpoints toward the central ridge and north coast. The walk is relatively short but includes a notable descent through changing habitats. It is a good choice for hikers interested in historic island connections and atmospheric woodland rather than a long levada day.
