Trail Description
PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro is Madeira's classic high-mountain ridge walk, linking Pico do Areeiro with Pico Ruivo through the Central Mountain Massif. The route crosses volcanic slopes, carved ledges, tunnels, steep stairways and exposed viewpoints, with memorable panoramas over the island's highest peaks and the surrounding valleys. It is a demanding and very popular hike where weather, visibility and official access restrictions can change quickly, so walkers should check the current trail status before setting out.
